Training

Once you’ve joined our lifesaving family, it’s time to begin your training journey. Whether you’re diving into the water or helping out on the beach, there’s a role for everyone—and we’ll guide you every step of the way.

Blue Card (For 18+ Members)

Before starting any official training, all members aged 18 and over need to apply for a Blue Card. It’s a Queensland requirement to help keep our young members safe.

Child Safety Training (Online)

All adult members are also asked to complete a short online child safety course (CYRMS/CSA). This training ensures we’re all working together to create a safe and supportive space for our nippers and youth members.

Bronze Medallion or Surf Rescue Certificate Courses – Water-Based Lifesaving

If you’re keen to patrol in the red and yellow and help save lives in the surf, this is your next step!
You’ll take part in both online and in-person training over multiple weeks or during a one-week intensive. You’ll learn rescue techniques, first aid, CPR, communication, and beach safety—and there are some fitness requirements like a 400m swim (under 9 minutes) or 200m swim (under 5 minutes) and a run-swim-run challenge. Once you pass, you’re ready to patrol our beaches with the team!

Land-Based Lifesaving Roles – For Non-Swimmers

Prefer to stay dry? No problem!
You can still be a valuable part of the patrol team in a land-based role. There’s no physical testing, and your training (a mix of online and practical sessions) will cover first aid, CPR, radios, and spotting risks on the beach. You’ll still wear the red and yellow and help keep our community safe.

Fitness Training

Our dedicated lifesavers participate in many group fitness training activities such as our running club, group hikes to Mt Coolum, board training and fitness sessions. We encourage our members to stay fit and healthy! A healthy lifestyle enhances stamina, mental clarity, and strength, all of which are essential for rescuing people in emergency situations.

We’re a small club, and we’re all about community, support, and fun—so no matter what role you take on, you’ll be part of a friendly team making a real difference.

Beach Patrol Hours

Marcoola Beach is patrolled by our volunteers from September until May each year, keeping our beautiful beach safe for our Marcoola visitors and community. Surf Life Saving Qld and the Sunshine Coast Council Lifeguard Service provide patrolling services mid-week and on weekends outside of these times.
